The Carumba Institute at Queensland University of Technology provides a world class Indigenous research and educational environment that foregrounds Indigenous sovereignty.
The Gilimbaa team was proud to work with the Carumba Institute to develop its visual identity, evolving an existing creative concept to be used across its brand identity, merchandise and social media strategy. This was based around the concept of ‘Black Knowing’ and an existing artwork by Judy Watson.
At the core of the Black Knowing brand is the idea of creating a space for Black knowledge without censorship. The brand represents a space where Black Knowing is valued and at the centre of knowledge production regardless of the end application.
The brand uses a redacted type treatment to represent the fight of Indigenous voices within the confines of traditional academia and refers to historical advancement of Indigenous rights.
